Our success story

The beginnings
FWG has its origins back in 1989 with the founding of Dr. Kaub & Wiesner AG by Dr. Erich Kaub, a management consultant from Munich, and Fredy Wiesner. What once started out as a consulting firm in the catering industry quickly took its course with the opening of its own restaurants. In 1990, Dr. Kaub and Fredy Wiesner started with the Tschaika Bistro-Russe in Münster/Westphalia near Düsseldorf. In 1991 Fredy Wiesner launched the first Café Sandwich in Zurich's Seefeld with business partners from Basel. This was also the start of the journey, always supported and accompanied by his wife Anita and his two sons Daniel and Manuel.

The first restaurant
After various smaller cafés and take-aways, a take-away kiosk at the Riesbach harbour, a hamburger and sausage vending cart at Oerlikon railway station and an extremely successful pretzel stand at Zurich's main railway station, the first actual restaurant was opened in 1997, the Outback Lodge at Stadelhofen railway station. With two more Australian restaurants in Winterthur and Uster, the horizon was broadened.


Start of the expansion
In 2004 the first Asian restaurant followed with the Nooch Asian Kitchen in Zurich's Kreis 4. With the opening of the first Negishi Sushi Bar in Basel in 2006, the continuing wave of expansion also began. In September 2011 the first own delivery service started in Oerlikon. With the first burger restaurant The Butcher in Zurich Niederdorf in mid-2015, the portfolio was further expanded. In summer 2019, a unique Korean concept was opened with Miss Miu on the prestigious Europaallee in Zurich.


Employee development
With the ongoing expansion, the number of employees has also grown accordingly. In order to improve the skills of our teams in line with the ever-increasing demands of the market and also to achieve greater motivation and satisfaction, we have been continuously expanding our employee development resources for years. With Become N°1, we have created an individual development program that accompanies employees through every level up to the position of managing director. Employees are supported along their career path through five modules of internal and external training, which are individually selected and developed for each level. With Become N°1, we also offer unskilled employees a chance for a successful career in the catering industry. By actively promoting motivated and talented employees, we are able to fill a large number of vacancies internally and minimize fluctuation during expansion.


Generation change
At the beginning of 2020, sons Daniel and Manuel took over the operational management of FWG from Fredy as Managing Directors. Fredy will of course continue to support FWG in word and deed and holds the mandate of Chairman of the Board of Directors.
